8. | Richard Orsmond was born in 1773 in Portsea, Hampshire, England (son of Thomas Orsmond and Mary Newcomb). Notes:
A Thomas Orsmond married Mary Newcomb in 1756 in Portsea and is possibly the same Thomas recorded as the father of the Orsmond "Stamvader " ,
Richard Orsmond (Snr)
Thomas and Mary had three children ,Richard Orsmond (Snr) , Mary Orsmond and Thomas Orsmond all baptised on the same day on 12 April 1773 at St Mary's Portsea.
All Orsmond's in South Africa are descendants of Richard Orsmond and Mary Hutchins through any one of his three sons: either John Thomas Orsmond, Richard Orsmond (Jnr) or Joseph Orsmond who all emigrated to the Eastern Cape Colony.
According to "England Births and Christenings 1538 to 1975 on Family Search.org John Thomas, Richard and Joseph are all recorded as being born in Portsea with parents Richard and Mary hence the assumption that they were brothers.
John Thomas's wife (Elizabeth Orsmond (nee Kidwell) and four children emigrated to Grahamstown in 1826, Richard emigrated to Grahamstown in 1836 and Joseph probably emigrated to Grahamstown before 1830.
Other children of Richard (Stamvader) who did not emigrate were Susanna, Martha, George, William, Mary Churchill,Sarah, and Charles. This re-enforces the belief that John Thomas, Richard and Joseph were brothers as the names George, Churchill and Charles are repeated in the three Orsmond families in Grahamstown.
Richard married Mary Hutchins on 15 Sep 1791 in Alverstoke, Hampshire, England. Mary was born on 25 Feb 1775 in Alverstoke, Hampshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
