One of four sons and daughters. Philip had a farm on the Cape frontier at Koonap. On 27 July 1840 John Ogilvie was born. 9 Aug 1842 Philip was born. The remaining member of his family was his younger son Joshua. Two heart rending letters remain written by John to his son Lewis in 1844 at the time of his insolvency. He was drowning in financial chaos. He seems to be recommending Lewis to his Uncle Joshua and warning him away from his Uncle Ben and brothers Joshua and Philip. These letters within documents, copied from the Cape Archive, of the case of JH Bartman and Benjamin Norden, 1852,versus the executor of the estate of John Norton, are the first reference to a son Philip and apparently a wife of Lewis named Kate.

The Chronicle of Jeremiah Goldswain, Albany settler of 1820, vol 2 1838-58. Una Long (ed). Van Riebeeck Society:Cape Town, 1949. p208 Philip Norton was Captain of the Graham's Town Provisional Hottentot Levy in 1846. In September 1828 John became a Freemason of the Albany Lodge. In 1830 John paid for sittings in St. George's Church. By 1831 John could afford to emply William Crout to trad among the farmers for livestock. In 1832 John bought Peter Heugh & Co.'s store and moved into it. In January 1833, he became a contractor to the Army in Graham's Town. In May 1833 he was a share-holder in the EP Joint-Stock Sheep Farmers Association. ??He sold "Beaufort Vale" before 1840. From 1840 - 1843 he farmed at "Cypherfontein" After the 1835 war, John became Right Worshipful Master of the Albany Lodge. In 1838 John Norton became a Municipal Commissioner and a Director of the Graham's Town branch of the Cape of Good Hope Bank. He owned a house in High Street and had 20 shares in the Cape of Good Hope Steam Navigation Company. In 1842 John became a partner with Benjamin Norden (Sarah's brother) in his business in Cape Town and Louis joined his business in Graham's Town. Joshua joined John and Benjamin in business. In 1844 he subscribed to a Tikvath Israel in Cape Town, to which he presented his share in a piece of land for use as a cemetary. Two weeks after the death of his son Philip (16-04-1847) John was declared insolvent. He had transferred his business to Cape Town, where he had a ships chandlery and a general merchants store and in his absence his store in Graham's Town had been run by C. Bezant. After the loss of his wife and two of his sons, John returned to England to try and recoup his losses. John died there on 20 Aug 1848.

CO48/44 p905 letter from John Norton requesting right of emigration to Cape Colony. Listed in Willson's party. However microfilm at PRO CO48/47 reveals Willson's list to have been enormously amended even to the point where he sends a letter to the Colonial Office to accompany amended version. None of the other lists have so many changes of name. It is easy to imagine not all were correctly listed.

CO48/44 p834 letter of application from Abraham to Colonial Office to emigrate to Cape Colony 26 July 1819. This was followed by another p869/70 with list of intended party. Written from his address at 70 Upper East Smithfield, Abraham describes himself as a 40 year old salesman with wife and 2 children - 1 male over 14 and 1 female under 14. Amongst others listed is Marcus Norden, gardner aged 29 with 2 female children under 14 of 21 Humberston Street Commercial Road. Also listed is Benjamin Norden, carpenter aged 24 with wife and 2 male children under 14 years old. His address was Marmion Street Commercial Road.

John Norton died two years after his elder son Louis and his wife, Sarah. He was bankrupt. Apparently guilty of fraud.
