Family Bible http://www.eggsa.org/documents/main.php?g2_itemId=1482804 Newspaper Cutting - "Fallen asleep - At Zeerust, Marico, on Sunday 13th February 1887, JOHN EDWARD HUTTON, age 60 years 4 months 2 days. The bereaved widow and children thank all friend for their kindness and sympathy.
It is my painful duty to have to record the death of our fellow-townsman, Mr John Edward Hutton, senr. which took place at his residence, at Zeerust, on Sunday morning, the 13th inst. A few days before his death he visited Malmaanie Goldfields, with some members of his family. While there he had an apopletic fit, but nothing serious wa expected until he received other similar attacks on his arrival at Zeerust, the day before his death. Deceased was one of the oldest residents of Zeerust, and is very properly called "the father of Zeerust" by most people in this district. He was much esteemed by everyone, and in him the village and district have lost an enterprising, hospitable and good man, such as is rarely met with in this country. At his funeral the Landdrost addressed a few words to those assembled, in which he sketched the past history of Mr Hutton, stating that he had been the friend of everyone, black and white, rich and poor, the stranger and the citizen. Many who have visited Zeerust, and are now far away, will not for the hospitality of our late fellow-townsman and the good-heartedness of himself and his family. The gathering at his funeral was the largest that had ever taken place here. His death has caused a vacancy in the community which will long be felt. He leaves a widow and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his loss. R.I.P."

The Aurora sailed from Deptford getting only as far as Gravesend where they were delayed by unfavourable winds till 15 February. The ship Aurora was commanded by Capt. Pearson and it took them 3 months to reach their destination arriving on Monday 15th May anchoring in Algoa Bay. The party consisted of : Men 101, Women 82, Children over 14 years 15, Children under 14 years 146, Total number of party 344. Founded the village of Salem.

From Algoa Bay the party was sent to Rietfontein between the Kasouga and Kowie Rivers.( now Barnsville Park ) where they were ousted to make room for a friend of the Governor, Lord Charles Somerset.- " General Campbell ". This was very vexatious and felt to be unfair, but there was no remedy, and the party were obliged to retrace their steps westward to where the Mantjes Kraal River joins the Assegai Bush River and where they arrived on Tuesday 18th July and pitched their tents, and founded the village of Salem, which means " peace " and is the only village founded by a settler party that still exists today. A community notable among the settlers for the order with which its affairs were conducted both temporal and spiritual.
Subsequently Hezekiah Sephton was granted land on the Mantjes Kraal River situated between Hope Fountain and Salem Commonage - which he named " Salem Park ". Salem Park was " Free Hold, " not a quit rent farm . Sephton lived for some time on this farm and then disposed of it to William Trotter, also of Sephtons Party; who eventually sold it out in 22 undivided shares and it became known as " Trotters Location " or " Trotters Valley " and was occupied chiefly by Kaffers who were a source of annoyance to their neighbours. His farm has had several owners since he parted with it and now is again known as " Salem Park ".
