Although the source on the net lists all as Frances and Joseph's children, I suspect that the children from Charlotte Martha onward (based on the 1st 4 being born one each year and her after a gap of 2years ) were all from his 2nd wife Jess Kelbrick. If Charlotte not, thenmost likely from Jessie Usher onward. Why otherwise would he have namedher Jessie? I have nevertheless left them as all being from his 1st wife.

He was a member of the Legislative Assembly for Grahamstown in 1855 and a Member of the Legislative Council, Eastern Districts in 1859. He was part owner of the Cawood Brothers Vessel "Unity" for Coastal Services.

He was an original 1820 Settler - His son was MP Legislative Council 1859-63.
Collingham farm also known as Governor's Kop, originally granted to Henry
Brooks, 1820 Settler. During 1847 he owned a vessel for coastal service &
brought it in at the mouth of the Lynedoch, or Kleinemonde river and
sucessfully landed goods from the ship by lighter. With his brother he built a
large goods shed there and named the little bay, "Port Jesse".
