    Notes:

The Tarrs of Rokewood offers up the following on Emma TARR and John
    RICHARDSON:

    [extract from page 112]
    "B6 Emma and John RICHARDSON
Now the story of the TARRs crosses with another well known Settler family , the RICHARDSONs. At the age of 21, Emma and John, then 28, married at Clumber in 1843. John's parents had led a part to the Cape and had settled nearKaffir Drift at Green Fountains. They later moved to Thorn Hill, near Shaw Park.

John was apprenticed to a wagon maker at Grahamstown before he took up farming and, in 1842, he was working at Thorn Hill. At the time of his marriage, he was a blacksmith and he also made two iron gates for Clumber churchyard. These gates are still there today and were the entrance gates to the burial ground from the Nottingham Party marketplace. Of particular interest is that he incorporated his intials "JR" into the design of the
    gates.

Drama was to befall the couple in their first year of marriage, while John was hunting a leopard on his farm. The leopard attacked him and bit through his arm. Fortunately he was recsued by "Mr PIRIE", who killed the animal with his knife. We cannot ascertain whether this Mr PIRIE was his brother-in-law, but it appears likely.

Being located so close to the border, Thorn Hill had its share of losses during the frontier wars. His father had been exempted from service in the 1835 wars due to his defective sight. His house was burned, two hundred cattle and forage stolen and one of his daughters had died from the effects of exposure. His losses were calculated to be [Pounds]396-9-9d and a list of the contents are detailed on six pages. The 1845/6 hostilities resulted in more stock thefts and John's house and stacks were burned in 1846. 224 cattle were taken and, during this period, his family appeared to be sheltering at Cuylerville.

In 1852 he volunteered for Commando work while at Timm's Camp. In about 1856 he bought the mill at Trappes Valley from William WRIGHT, where he lived all his life.

John and Emma had seven children, but Emma sadly died shortly after the seventh child was born. John subsequently married Sarah Ann GRIFFITHS and had another eight children."

Sarah CHARLTON, whose second husband was James RICHARDSON, was the sister of Mary CHARLTON, wife of William Senior DENTON. John CHARLTON witnessed the marriage of Sarah and James, and the marriage of William and Mary was witnessed by John and Harriet CHARLTON (the marriage of John CHARLTON to Harriet TOMES on 11 October 1809 in Sheffield Cathedral was witnessed by Mary CHARLTON) so I think John was a brother of Sarah and Mary. The following baptisms seem plausible, even although it would make Sarah and Mary a year or two older than declared on the settler returns.
