4. | Charles Edward Nicholls was born on 21 Aug 1844 in Mossel Bay; was christened on 7 May 1846 in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa; died on 22 Oct 1915 in Cape Town. Notes: As a young child he narrowly escaped from the Xhosa uprising at Grahamstown. Admitted to Christ's Hospital, London ('the bluecoat school'), 2nd May 1854, aged 9, from St Mary's Islington (his grandfather's home): discharged 13th July 1859 by his grandmother Mrs Charlotte Nicholls of 10 Bath Place, Dalston, 'who will provide for him as his father is at the Cape of Good Hope'. Completed his education at Diocesan College, Rondebosch. Commenced business at Port Elizabeth and later joined Mr P.O. Bertram at Queenstown, Merchant of Queenstown 1870, 1872. A Director at Queenstown Frontier Commercial Agricul;tural Bank. A Freemason there, later a supporter of the Buffalo Lodge. Carried on a large business at East London for a number of years, eventually retiring to the farm Sunnyside at East London. Director of the Kaffrarian Boating Co. of East London. Chairman of the East London West Farmers' Association; Chairman of the East London West Schools Committee. Held the medal for the 1880 Basuto War and commanded the Kaffrarian Voluteer Artillery in the 1880's - held the rank of Captain. Took a keen interest in politics and was a staunch supporter of the Progressive (Later the Unionist) Party. He took an active part in the return of Sir Thomas Smart when he was elected for East London. Named in his father's will ( a trustee of the Nicholls Memorial Fund.) Moved to Cape Town in May 1910 to benefit his health. ( Braeside, Wynberg, Cape Town and Sunnyside, East London, 1912.) He was a retired farmer and merchant died aged 71 at Aberdeen House, Observatory, Cape Town. Will was dated 1 November, 1902, proved 8 November 1915 Charles married Caroline Elizabeth Leach on 22 Mar 1870 in Queenstown C P. Notes: Died: Notes: He took the farm "Aluin Krantz" over from his father Benjamin on 15th October, 1856, and sold it to John Sweet Distin on 15th October, 1858. The Leach family seem to have stayed on the farm by some arrangement. (See photographs taken by the author B H L Leach of the ruin foundations of the house where Hermina was struck and killed by lightning as she was removing mielie meal from the bag near the door in her kitchen. Also the photo of stone covered graves in the cemetary on the farm where she was probably buried. It is said that Benjamin was away carrying foods and a brother of his arrived at the scene shortly after the tragedy and took over arrangements. This incident was reported in the "Grahamstown Journal".
