Notes: Darrel Brown wrote : "Charles James Spiller was married and lived in Graaff Reinet since 1822 to 14th of May 1866, he had been murdered in his house in Graaff Reinet, he was stabbed in his stomach and only died two to three days later. On his death bed he instructed a friend to draw up a new will pertaining to his assets. In his will he left all his assets to his wife, however he also left to Mary Ann Brown the sum of 50 pounds and invested 500 pounds Stirling in the bank of which she could draw the interest until the day she died. To her son James Benjamin Brown he left the sum of 500 pounds Stirling. That's when the penny dropped. Why would a married man leave that type of money to another women and her son. “He was the father of her illegitimate child”. Charles married Catherine Madden, 1820 Settler on 22 Jun 1815 in St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London, England.
