    The Tarrs of Rokewood offers up the following on Emma TARR and John
    RICHARDSON:

    [extract from page 112]
    "B6 Emma and John RICHARDSON
    Now the story of the TARRs crosses with another well known Settler family , the RICHARDSONs. At the age of 21, Emma and John, then 28, married at Clumber in 1843. John's parents had led a part to the Cape and had settled nearKaffir Drift at Green Fountains. They later moved to Thorn Hill, near Shaw Park.

    John was apprenticed to a wagon maker at Grahamstown before he took up farming and, in 1842, he was working at Thorn Hill. At the time of his marriage, he was a blacksmith and he also made two iron gates for Clumber churchyard. These gates are still there today and were the entrance gates to the burial ground from the Nottingham Party marketplace. Of particular interest is that he incorporated his intials "JR" into the design of the
    gates.

    Drama was to befall the couple in their first year of marriage, while John was hunting a leopard on his farm. The leopard attacked him and bit through his arm. Fortunately he was recsued by "Mr PIRIE", who killed the animal with his knife. We cannot ascertain whether this Mr PIRIE was his brother-in-law, but it appears likely.

    Being located so close to the border, Thorn Hill had its share of losses during the frontier wars. His father had been exempted from service in the 1835 wars due to his defective sight. His house was burned, two hundred cattle and forage stolen and one of his daughters had died from the effects of exposure. His losses were calculated to be [Pounds]396-9-9d and a list of the contents are detailed on six pages. The 1845/6 hostilities resulted in more stock thefts and John's house and stacks were burned in 1846. 224 cattle were taken and, during this period, his family appeared to be sheltering at Cuylerville.

    In 1852 he volunteered for Commando work while at Timm's Camp. In about 1856 he bought the mill at Trappes Valley from William WRIGHT, where he lived all his life.

    John and Emma had seven children, but Emma sadly died shortly after the seventh child was born. John subsequently married Sarah Ann GRIFFITHS and had another eight children."

    1820 Settler; arrived with family as members of Calton's Party aboard the "Albury", which sailed from Liverpool 12 Feb 1820. Came from the Keyworth area in Nottingham. Settled in Clumber.

    An excerpt from Pg. 102 History of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of South Africa by Rev.J.Whiteside, London 1906 :Salem, The Mother Church {per Sylvia Gazendam}
    "Mr. Shaw sought out and gathered round him a noble band of lay assistants, or the spiritual needs of the people could not have been supplied. Amongst these helpers were Messrs. Oates and Roberts of Salem; Richard Walker, of Port Francis; John Ayliff of Wilson's party; William Shepstone, of the New Bristol location; William Pike, of Clumber; Messrs. Aldham, Bonnin, Sargeant, Booth, Attwell, and many others who fed and fanned the flame of piety. These plain preachers of a plain Gospel went from location to location taking shady trees or sheltering woodside as their standing places, and gathered around them little companies, seated on the grass, listening attentively, and thankful to find themselves remembered and cared for in reference to their highest of all interests. Messrs. Ayliff and Shepstone, at a later date, entered the ranks of the oirdained ministry, and became distinguished missionaries. Richard Walker rendered scarcely less valuable service as an assistant missionary on several stations. Opposition was overruled in one instance 'for the futherance of the Gospel." Dr. Calton, the head of the Nottingham party, was a determined opponent of Methodism, and attempted to prevent any of its adherents being in his vessel, the Albany. Great was his vexation to find, when at sea, that at least one Wesleyan, Mr. Pike, was on board, and that he was holding meetings for prayer. Dr. Calton threatened the offender that unless he kept his religion to himself he would have no allotment of land on his arrival in Cape Colony. Strange to say, Dr. Calton died in Algoa Bay. After the settlement of the party at Clumber, Mr. Pike regularly held services in the bush, close to his tent; and his simple piety and manifest sincerity having won the esteem of his fellow settlers, they elected him head of the party. Clumber became a centre of spiritual influence, and has so continued to this day. The people have retained not a little of the quaint simplicity and religious fervour of English rural Methodism when at its best."

    DEATH OF A SETTLER.- The Cape Times contains a notice of the death of Mr. James LOW, supposed to be the last of the first settlers, having lived in the Colony for sixty-eight years. He arrived first in 1814, and was stationed at the Cape for three years, being in the Navy. He returned to England in 1818, and subsequently to the Cape in 1820. He was also engaged in the American Civil War.

    James + Mary Evenden, 1820 Settler. Mary was born in 1801 in England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Mary Evenden, 1820 Settler was born in 1801 in England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • 1820 Lineage: Yes
    • Settler ID: 435
    • Settler: 3 Dec 1819, Gravesend, Kent, England

    Notes:

    The magistrate's powers were invoked when Mary Evenden, a young woman who emigrated as a servant with the family of Captain Henry Crause, gave birth to an illegitimate baby and applied for an affiliation order against James Low. Captain Trappes had to find out from the Deputy Landdrost's office what procedure he should follow; there had been no similar case at Bathurst to give him a precedent. Low managed to shed his responsibilities a year later by leaving Albany for Cape Town. Ref. CA CO 178: Memorial of J Low dated 9.9.1822 {Lynn MacLeod}

    James married Sarah Charlton, 1820 Settler on 15 May 1814 in Sheffield cathedral, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Sarah (daughter of William Charlton and Elizabeth) was born in 1788; died about 1830. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  Sarah Charlton, 1820 Settler was born in 1788 (daughter of William Charlton and Elizabeth); died about 1830.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • 1820 Lineage: Yes
    • Settler ID: 3814
    • Settler: 13 Jan 1820, Liverpool, Lancashire, England

    Notes:

    Sarah CHARLTON, whose second husband was James RICHARDSON, was the sister of Mary CHARLTON, wife of William Senior DENTON. John CHARLTON witnessed the marriage of Sarah and James, and the marriage of William and Mary was witnessed by John and Harriet CHARLTON (the marriage of John CHARLTON to Harriet TOMES on 11 October 1809 in Sheffield Cathedral was witnessed by Mary CHARLTON) so I think John was a brother of Sarah and Mary. The following baptisms seem plausible, even although it would make Sarah and Mary a year or two older than declared on the settler returns.
