"Thomas "By Jingo" and Mary TARR
According to one of his descendants, "this is the name we always revered as the gambler and 'wild one' with stories of him riding a horse through a butcher shop and coming out festooned with sausages. He then proceeded up towards where Rhodes University now stands and galloped his horse full tilt through the Drostdy archway. The police could not stop him so they erected a barrier pole across the arch at a point where, at the crucial moment he would be unable to stop! His momentum was, therefore arrested in more ways than one ..."

Thomas farmed at Clumber, having inherited the original Settler farm from his father. Before this, he had bought the neighbouring farm, allotment No. 26 orginally granted to Samuel JACKSON. He bought the farm in 1852 from Frances HULLEY for [Pounds]150. This was identical in size to Rokewood, so when his father died in 1858 he farmed both allotments. Rokewood was left to his son Herbert. At the stage of drawing up the Will in July 1890,
Thomas and Mary had made a proviso that their two, then unmarried daughters, Ada Eliza and Fanny May should have the right to reside in the residence and "to have use and occupation of one bedroom each with right of use of sitting room". However, the daughters married and a codicil to the Will, four years later, required Herbert to pay [Pounds]150 for the farm, which amount would then devolve upon the surviving daughters. As some stage, one of the farms was named Mount Pleasant.

Thomas also bought a larger farm in 1874 from George WOOD. According to their Will, it was "the location calles Austens Grant or otherwise The Clay Pits". This was 254 morgen and Thomas paid [Pounds]508 for it. On Thomas' death, this farm was left in equal shares to Reuben, Thomas Henry and Herbert. Eventually the brothers sold their shares to Reuben, who owned it until 1909 when it was sold out of his insolvent estate."

Notes:

JOHN & MARY and their seven children, JOHN 25, EDMUND 22, ELEANOR 20, JOSEPH 18, MARY 17, RICHARD 13 and THOMAS 10, travelled for 3 days frrom Nottingham, the men on foot, the women & children by coach, to Liverpool to join Surgeon Thomas CALTON’S PARTY of Settlers. Calton predicted that the framework knitters, “better talkers than workers”, had little chance of becoming successful settlers. On 13 February, 1820, they embarked on the ALBURY. They arrived at Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth, on 15th May, 1820, and were taken by ox-wagon to Clumber.

Dorothea Rowse write in October 2017:
1.His family thought that Joshua was born at Bilston but he appears to be the child baptised at Wombourn, about six miles away, in 1785.
2.Joshua had served with the British Army and he clearly used to reminisce about his role as a cavalry soldier in the Peninsular Wars. Henry Dugmore when reminiscing about the life of Clumber Methodist chapel in the 1830s noted the presence of Joshua Davies, the old cavalry soldier, who could tell of the horse he rode at the battle of Fuentes d’Onoro, and whose wife was one of the most devoted Christians in the neighbourhood. The battle took place in May 1811 when Wellington checked an attempt by the French-Portuguese Army to relieve the besieged city of Almeida. About 1800 British soldiers were killed.
3.The official lists for Bradshaw’s Party do not include him and Nash lists him as a member of Greathead’s Party from Worcestershire which also sailed on the Kennersley Castle. He was described as a sawyer and farmer.
4.He was granted land with Bradshaw’s party on the instruction of Sir Rufane Donkin. He signed the declaration as to settlement of the Party in October 1843.
5.He purchased the allotment No. 4 of 24 morgen, originally allocated to Henry King Snr; Henry King exchanged it with Samuel Bennett, who sold it to Thomas Brent, who sold it to William Hunt, who sold it to Mrs Whittle, who sold it to Joshua Davies. He kept the homestead and sold the common land to Isaac Wiggill.
6.He also eventually owned Philip King’s allotment; Philip sold it to Elisha Paine who sold it to Isaac Dedman, who sold it to Joshua Davies.
7.Three months before his death he ceded his allotment no.2 at New Gloucester to his son Daniel. His will included allotment no.1 which consisted of 50 acres and a house built of sods.
8.His death was reported by Daniel Davies on 2.10.1848.

"1. Thomas was a cousin to the King brothers since his mother Hannah and their mother Ann Worlock were sisters, the daughters of John and Hannah Worlock of North Nibley, a village about three miles from Dursley.
2. He was described as a Royal Naval pensioner and farmer when he emigrated. He was probably the Thomas Brent who served on HMS Sirius at the Battle of Trafalgar - he was listed in the Ships pay book on 4.8.1804. In December 1820 Thomas had to obtain a Magistrate’s identification before his RN pension could be paid from Simonstown.
3. Thomas moved to Grahamstown to live for a while in 1822 but he spent most of his life on the New Gloucester location. His house and furniture were burnt and cattle all taken during the last Kafir war in January 1846; he died in May of that year. His property at New Gloucester was inherited by his son Thomas who farmed it for a while but it was being offered for sale in 1853.
