    Notes:

    He, last surviving son of John Dell, was born at Barville Park in 1847. His
    first wife Rhoda Hobbs was the grand daughter of another 1820 settler who came
    in his own vessel. She died in 1896. Later he married Lavinia Gibbens of
    Cathcart, who survived him. He took part in the early diamond rush where he
    secured a large diamond which remains an heirloom in the possession of his
    eldest daughter. He settled near Cathcart and took part in the various wars
    and also in the defence forces in the Anglo-Boer War. He took an active part
    in promoting civic interests in his district, being on the local board and at
    one time District Superintendent. About 1909 he retired and settled at
    Creighton in the Ixopo District where he was a J.P. and president of the
    Sporting Club. He was survived by his wife and seven children.

    James married Rhoda Hobbs in 1869.     Notes:

    Malvina was a beautiful woman with wonderful long auburn hair, with a regal and upright bearing. Quiet, impractical and not suited to the rigors of frontier life. She died aged 63 whilst on an ox-wagon journey in the Macleantown district. They were going to the farm of their eldest son, Edward Richard Dell, near Kei Road. Rupert Dell, her grandson, erected the tombstone on her grave at the Macleantown Cemetery, Eastern Cape, South Africa in 1882. According to a Death Certificate in her husband's estate file she died 19 July 1874.
