Sgt. Major Alexander Nesbitt

Alexander Nesbitt 1806-1849 who was a Major in the 12th Regiment and went to the Cape with them. He was born in Portsmouth, England and was married to Anne Armstrong or Woods who according to records in Cape Archives died on 6 Jul 1866 aged 60 in cottage corner of Crop Street King Williams Town. She was the same Mrs Nesbitt who was travelling on the Birkenhead with two or three of her children when the ship struck a reef and floudered off Danger Point. The Nesbitts who own the Cecil Hotel in Bulawayo have in their possession the Bible that was presented to Mrs Nesbitt and children whilst they were travelling on the Birkenhead and was obviously saved when they were forced to swim ashore.
