    Local and General.
    DEATH OF MR. E BRADFIELD. – It has become our painful duty to record the addition of another name to the list of those original Settlers who have closed their eyes in death during the Jubilee year of their settlement. At the good old age of seventy-three, Mr. E. BRADFIELD, of this town, expired, almost suddenly, on Sunday morning last. Up to the time of retiring to rest the previous evening, the deceased gentleman was all appearance, n his usual health and spirits, having merely complained of a slight pain in the chest for a few days previously. At about six o’clock on the Sunday morning Mrs. BRADFIELD was alarmed by a rattling in his throat, but before she could procure a light he had ceased to breathe.

    His funeral, which took place on Monday afternoon, was followed by a large number of those who had been acquainted with him during his lifetime, and who thus testified to the esteem in which he had been universally held. The late Mr. BRADFIELD came to this colony in 1820, with the Nottingham party, and was with his companions, located at Clumber, where two of the deceased gentleman’s brothers are to this day residing on their original allotments. His own life in this country had partaken largely of the vicissitudes which marked the career of many of the early settlers. By each of the three successive Kafir wars which have desolated the Frontier was Mr. BRADFIELD completely ruined; and as often did he press manfully forward in the battle of life and recover his lost ground. The circumstances of the last of these calamities which befell him were exceptionally cruel. Carrying on business at Mancazana Post, he upon the first rumour of war, removed the whole of his stock to Fort Beaufort. Reassured by the proclamation in which Sir Harry SMITH discountenanced the belief that war was impending, and believing that Government would be responsible in case it did occur, he returned to his place of business. Immediately the war of 1851 actually broke out, Mr BRADFIELD was just able to make his escape from the Post with his family of eight children leaving the whole of his property at the mercy of the enemy. He never recovered anything, or received the slightest compensation from Government.

    After spending a year or two in Somerset and Port Elizabeth, Mr. BRADFIELD took up his abode in Cradock , where he resided for the last seventeen years. In the general regret which has followed his loss, and the sincere sympathy accorded to his family, we have the best testimony to his worth, and to the respect entertained for him while living. – Cradock Expres.

    Julia appears to have married John Wright at the tender age of 16 - likely because she was pregnant with their first child, John -in Dublin. John Wright died while on a visit to his brother in America, and left Julia a rich widow. She remarried Anglican Edward Ford Turvey, also from the Dublin area. He lost most of her fortune in a business venture with Aiken and McGrath, ship owners. Edward Ford Turvey organised a party of settlers including his wife's brothers Peter Clarke Daniel, Sampson O'Malia Daniel and John Nevins Daniel in 1820.{cldaniel@mweb.co.za }

    Grahamstown Journal reports her death.
    "December 1837
    Departed this life on Friday evening, 1st Dec. Mrs.Julia TURVEY, aged 60 years, deeply regretted by her numerous offspring. She was a tender Mother, a faithful Wife and sincere Friend. Her early prospects ill fitted her to combat with an adverse world; but it brought her nearer to her God and enabled her to triumph over Death and the Grave, imparting a happy consolation to her bereaved partner, to whom a union of 32 years only served to increase her affection, and who leaves this testimony of her worth."

    DEED DATE 1792 21st February

    GRANTOR William Bolton of Dublin, esquire of the first part; Benjamin Wright of Dublin, merchant, of the second part
    GRANTEE Julia Bolton, of Dublin, spinster, daughter of the said
    William Bolton, of the third. part;
    Abraham Bolton. and James Cowley of Dublin, gentlemen, of the fourth part
    WITNESSES Lyndon Bolton of Dublin, merchant, and John Thomas Cowley of Dublin, gentleman

    COMMENTS
    (1) The Deed is a Marriage Settlement whereby William Bolton makes over £400/
    /to the trustees Abraham Bolton and James Cowley with a bond of £800//to secure the £400//.
    Benjamin Wright makes over his stock in trade, present and future to the trustees subject to the trust with power given to the trustees to sell the stock in trade on his death or "should his circumstances fail" to provide the £400/
    /to Julia Bolton for her support and maintenance and on her death between her
    children. equally, and if no children to dispose of as she wished. In the event of Benjamin Wright's death or changed circumstances the trustees were to pay the £400/
    /to Julia Bolton. Benjamin Wright died in or before 1805. Julia then married Edward Turvey, by licence, in 1805. From her dealings with Ballinahorney, (see Volume 572 Page 403 Number 390210), it is assumed that she had an inheritance, consisting of part of Ballinahorney, over and above this marriage settlement from her father.

    (2) William Bolton of Ballinvalley, father of Julia Bolton, is here described as "of Dublin". In 1772 he was described in a Deed as "of Ballinvalley", (see Volume 296 Page 98 Number 194443), and, in 1776 he was described, in a Deed, as "of Prospect. See Volume 363 Page 323 Number 532572. Abraham Bolton,
    a trustee of the Marriage Settlement, is clearly Julia's brother, being named in a Deed as being William Bolton's eldest son. See Volume 296 Page 98 Number 194443. Lyndon Bolton is, I assume, William Bolton's second son, named in Volume 296 Page 98 Number 194443 as Roger Lyndon Bolton, and E9; the Lyndon Bolton
    said by Burke to be the son of William Bolton of Dublin and Island by his second wife "Miss Lyndon".

    (3) Dr Greathead cites the Quaker Records as authority for the marriage of "Julia Bolton, daughter of William Bolton of Ballinvalley" to Benjamin Wright in 1792. Clearly we are dealing with the same William Bolton in each of the above Deeds I have referred to in this entry, namely, William Bolton of Ballinvalley, Prospect, and Dublin.

    The above is quoted from page 119 of download the PDF file at https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/468758-the-bolton-family-of-county-wexford-ireland-with-emphasis-on-land-records
