Death of Jonathan AYLIFF, Esq., M.L.A.
The cable news that the ex-Colonial Secretary had passed away on 20th inst., in London, was received with general feelings of regret. In these times of self-seeking the loss of men of such known integrity as attached to Mr. AYLIFF is keenly felt. As an old resident of Grahamstown his personality will there be missed the most, but his removal by death will be felt throughout the Colony. With a lawyer’s training, Mr. AYLIFF plunged into politics and entered into the Cape Parliament, representing Grahamstown. Under Mr UPINGTON, Mr. AYLIFF was offered the Colonial Secretaryship, which he accepted and only resigned on account of ill health. Mr AYLIFF married a daughter of the late Hon. George WOOD. To the widow and children and relatives, we tender the sympathy of the district. We shall hope to give an account of Mr. AYLIFF’s blameless life in our next issue.

Stanton, Ellen, email, 8 Apr 2003, harprulz at bellsouth.net.
"AYLIFF, John, undoubtedly came out with the 1820 Settlers, but there is no mention of his name in any Settler's list. A careful search has been made in the list in the Archives in Cape Town but without success. He is said to have been in Willson's party on the Belle Alliance-but no such name appears. In spite of this, however, there cannot be the slightest doubt but that he came with the Settlers of 1820. Rev. J. Ayliff (as well as his famous sons Reuben and William) played very important parts in the history of the east-to give a full account would be to write the history of those times."

Could have been listed as Ayliff Dold, according to M D Nash, to bypass paying the fees!

This is taken from the book "The Journal of John Ayliff 1821-1830" edited by Peter Hinchliff for the Rhodes University Graham's Town Series published by A A Balkema, Cape Town in 1971 for Rhodes University. This was Book 1 of the Series. These books, known as 'The Graham's Town Series' were sponsored by Rhodes University and the contents contained excerpts from diaries, reminiscences and letters mainly from the Eastern Cape. This particular book was prepared from 'The Diary of the Rev William Shaw' edited by W D Hammond-Tooke, 'The Reminiscences of Thomas Stubbs' edited by W A Maxwell and 'The Journal of Sophia Pigot' edited by M Rainier.
"Very little is known about John Ayliff's life in the years before he sailed for the Cape, at the age of twenty-two, as a member of the parties of 1820 Settlers. He had been born in London on 7 November 1797. His conversion as a Methodist took place on 1 April 1817. All Fool's Day, for most people an inauspicious day dedicated to practical joking, became the annual reminder of his commitment to that which mattered most to him, his decision to become "a fool for Christ's sake". He was an accredited Methodist local preacher before he left England and his reason for coming to the Cape was at least partly an embryonic sense of vocation to missionary work. Ayliff was probably a silk weaver in London before 1820, employed by Peter Bedford, a Quaker merchant and enthusiastic supporter of missions. Such education as Ayliff had was picked up by his own efforts or through Sunday Schools, which in those days taught the children of the poorer classes the elements of reading and writing as well as the basic truths of religion. When the settlement of 1820 was planned, the British Colonial Office received, amongst the lists submitted by potential leaders of parties, a proposal from Matthew Dold for a group which included the name of J. Ayliff, a weaver. Dold's party collapsed. But Dold himself and some of his followers attached themselves to the party of Thomas Willson, which sailed for the Cape in the Belle Alliance."

Newspaper cuttings from the Eastern Cape., 5 Apr 2003.
"The men of the family - there were two sons and two daughters - were each given 40 hectares of land in the Bathurst district. Before the DOLD left Algoa Bay, the marriage of Jane DOLD to fellow settler, John AYLIFF provided an historic occasion. Because there was no legal marriage officer on land, it became necessary for the couple to be rowed out to the ship Menai, where they were legally married by the master, Captain Fairfax MORESBY.on June 25, 1820. This marriage is believed to be the first to take place between Settlers in Algoa Bay. John AYLIFF entered the ministry and as a member of the Methodist Church became famous throughout the country as a missionary and head of the well known AYLIFF family."

ENTERED INTO REST, at Rock Cottage, at 10:30pm on the 7th May 1889, Jane, widow of the Rev. John AYLIFF, aged 90 years and 4 months.

    DEATH OF MRS. AYLIFF
This esteemed Lady passed away from life very peacefully on Tuesday night. She was in her 91st year. Mrs. AYLIFF, whose maiden name was DOLD, came to this Colony in 1820 with the British Settlers, and in conjunction with her husband, the late Rev. John AYLIFF, she spent all the active years of her life in the work of missions. She lived to see various members of her family occupying important Parliamentary and official positions, and she has died in full years, in the enjoyment of a Christian hope, and in the love and esteem of a very extensive circle of friends.

George Wood, apprenticed to Richard Smith, a carpenter, cane out with Sephton's party on board the Brilliant. They settled at Salem with a community notable among the settlers for 'the order with which its affairs were conducted, both spiritual and temporal.'

    Notes:

Susannah and her brother Thomas were stepchildren of taxidermist Joseph Donovan, who came out on La Belle Alliance with Willson's party.

Extract from "They came from a far land" by May Bell - Page 18:
Susan was a demure little nine-year-old, with pale gold hair and the mild expression so much admired at that time. But placid as she appeared, Susan was a frightened child: afraid of her stepfather, afraid of the sea - which had drowned her sailor uncle - enduring agonies of concealed terror in the storms they passed through. For her little brother Thomas she had an absorbed devotion, perhaps because she felt the two of them to be alone in the world.
Her father had been a musician. He died young, leaving his wife two children, a pile of manuscript music, and not much else. Fortunately for Mrs Garbett, who seems to have been a nonentity, but a blonde and pretty one - she met and married Joseph Donovan and produced two sons.....He [Joseph Donovan] could not bear the idea of his wife having belonged to another man. He burnt all Garbett's manuscript music, for which Susan never forgave him, and he may sometimes have wished that Garbett's children could have been as easily disposed of. Susan certainly thought so."
