    Notes:

    Richard was killed in an attack by Xhosa tribesmen on the wagon they had been using to collect wood. Samuel managed to escape, and his brother John died later as a result of the injuries sustained in the attack.

    Richard and his second wife, Sarah KENT arrived in South Africa with Mahoney's party on the ship Northampton. Sarah had been his housekeeper prior to the death of his first wife Elizabeth MITCHELL.
