    Notes:

James was born en route to South Africa from England on the Northampton, which left Gravesend 13 Dec 1819, hence his second name Northampton.
He farmed in the Cathcart area, and suffered great losses due to bad weather, unforeseen damge to property and illness at Pink (?) Valley farm in Klipplaat River district near Queenstown. He was gazetted on 7 Sep 1869. However, his estate papers show a positive balance at time of death farming at Woodburn, and he left stock and goodwill of farm to his wife, Elizabeth. (It seems like he was leasing the farm). Neither he nor his wife could write.
His death notice says he died at his own residence, Klipplaat River, Cathcart.
No date of birth is given, but from another source I have learnt all births at sea (his birth place says "the high seas") were registered at Stepney, London.
