    Death of Former Queenstonian.
    The Kokstad correspondent of the “Daily Dispatch” regrets to announce the death of Mr. George BARNES, which occurred on Tuesday at the farm of his son-in-law, Mr. Alf KIRK. Mr. BARNES came to East Griqualand over 40 years ago from Queenstown. He was well known in the territories as a progressive farmer. He had reached the ripe age of 83. His large family of sons and daughters are all in the neighbourhood.

    David BARNES was born in Ireland and arrived in the Cape in 1815.
    David BARNES b. abt. Dec 1774 in Ireland d. 5 May 1847 in Somerset East. He arrived in Table Bay on the 25 October 1815 on the "Dawson". He departed from Falmouth. His wife Elizabeth arrived in Table Bay, aboard the "Cornwallis" ex Fowey, the following year on 24 October 1816.

    In May 1818 he purchased erf11 in Grahamstown from John Sheppard.

    His death was reported in the Graham's Town Journal:
    Died at Somerset on the 5th May 1847 after a long and painful illness, Mr. David BARNES, aged 73 years and four months, deeply regretted by his family and friends. His funeral was numerously and respectably attended.

    He is buried in the Somerset East Museum Cemetery, Eastern Cape.

    Robert PIRIE was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth UNKNOWN to whom he was married in 1807 in England. She died in England before he emigrated to the Cape. Their daughter was Margaret PIRIE born about 1808 d 20 August 1897.
    His second wife was Mary 'Rache' (she was known as Rachel in the family, not Mary) in England. She was born about 1795 in England.
    They had 4 children (Robert PIRIE) we know nothing about him other than a mention in the Lower Albany Chronicles:
    2 November 1843. John RICHARDSON had been attacked by a leopard while hunting it on Thorn Hill. H brought it to the ground. He was rescued by Mr. Pirie (his step-son) who killed the animal with his knife.

    He is also mentioned in his father's will.
    "....which I leave to my dear children Robert, Sarah Ann, Mary Ann and Elizabeth PIRIE at the death of their mother." Signed Robert PIRIE.
