James 'Jennens' grew up near Grahamstown & in 1837 married Sarah Saunders. They had a large family. They trekked to the Transvaal in 1866, settling on the farm 'Blaauwbank' north of Krugersdorp. He was a famous hunter, who ventured into Matabeleland as far as the Zambesi valley in search of ivory.

James Jennings fell ill whilst waiting for their ship and was taken to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital where he died. His wife and 3 children sailed on the "Weymouth" on 7 Jan 1820 and arrived at Algoa bay on 15 May 1820. (This story does tie up with another. It is not certain whether there was one child or whether there were three boys.) I think that his fathers name was also James.

Extracted from "The Settlers Handbook" by M D Nash:
"James Jennings and his wife Mary and young son James were part of Edward Ford's party that sailed aboard the "Weymouth" for South Africa in 1820. However, while the ship was waiting at Portsmouth prior to sailing, James took ill and was taken to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital where he subsequently died. His wife and 3 year old son sailed with the rest of the party. Her second husband, Joseph King, adopted James.

Ford's party reached Algoa Bay on the 15th May 1820. After being located, Ford's party was moved twice before finally being assigned land on the right bank of the Lynedoch River. It stayed together under Ford's leadership until 1824, when acrimony about the division of land resulted in a petition for his removal. It is interesting to note that the three parties of Whilshire labourers (Ford's, Hyman's and James') were the only settler parties to remain virtually intact under their original leaders during the settlement's first three years."

On 21 Dec,1819 they boarded the Weymouth at Portsmouth & some days later when they put into Spithead, James fell seriously ill and it was decided to put the family ashore. He was taken off by longboat & admitted to Hasler Hospital buy and the baby could follow a gale blew up which made landing impossible. The Weymouth sailed for the Cape with them still aboard and it was only on her arrival at the Cape that she learned that her husband had died after entering the hopital. I have not been able to trace her maiden name but I think her parents were Jeremiah and Eleanor. VW.
