He set up a printing press which he had brought with him and endeavoured to translate and print sections af the bible and hymns into Seshoto. When the Baralong and Korrana tribes were removed from near Kurumam after a smallpox plague which had decimated them,Richard negociated a piece of land from Moshesh near by where they settled and when in 1854 the O.F.S. took over the area west of the Caledon river including Platberg and Thaba Nchu Richard negociated and iniated a deed which secured for the Methodist churh Korrana and Baralong the area they had been settled in, resulting in that remaining a tribal area which was eventually incorporated into Baphutaswana. While at Platberg and ThabaNchu Richard Giddy did a valueable amount of churchwork for the boers who had trekked to the O.F.S. the raad at Bloemfontein therefore granted him two farms near Memel Called Giddy"s hoek and Giddy"s Home, the former has been split into smaller farms the latter still exists. Giddy was unable to take possesion of the farms and when he wished to retire they had been taken over by others, however, the records were there and another farm called Koelhoek was granted him instead. This farm was sold and after his death his wife used the proceeds to purchase the farm Kelvin Grove in the Barkly East district which he had selected for his retirement.
