    SHEPSTONE, John. Twenty four years old mason with a three year old son, Theophilus on arrival. The latter when eighteen in the 1835 Kaffir War was interpreter to Sir Benjamin D'URBAN.
    He became very prominent in Native Affairs, particularly in Natal, Zululand and Ponderland. In 1877 was sent by the British Government to annex the Transvaal. He was knighted for his long and distinguished career.

    She could have been called Mary, according to MD Nash. John's wife and mother of Theophilus when they came out in Holder's party was MARY.



    She is buried alongside the Missionary track on the Western Bank of the Begha River near the village of Wooldridge.
    The inscription on her headstone reads:
    Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth wife of Rev. William Shepstone Wesleyan Missionary who departed this life the 19th day of July 1833 aged 40 years she died at this place in the house of Mr. Daniel Roberts while on a journey from her residence at Wesleyville to Graham's Town after an illness of 14 days. She had been engaged in the Caffre Mission from its commencement and after enduring hardship as a good soldier of Christ 10 years. She died in peace relying on the blood of Christ for acceptance with God. "What e'er we do whatsoever We're travelling to the Grave".
