His embarkation record listed by Nash and Theale has his age as 31, which would put his birth year as 1788 or 1789.
Morse Jones has his emabkation age as 34, ie born c 1785. His death notice also calculates his birth year to be c. 1785. The baptism record found for St Mary, Marylebone in London for 5 Dec 1784 would corroborate this date, and gives his parents as Christopher and Margaret.
His death notice was signed by 2 of his sons, William and John, and stated that he was from Ridding. There is a village/town of Riddings in Derbyshire, or was it meant to be Reading in Berkshire, or the street address of Ridding lane in London. I cannot see him being born in Derbyshire or Berkshire and then baptised 6 days later in London unless his parents were from Reading and were visiting London at the time! {ptt}

Went out to South Africa as part of Gush's Party aboard the ship Brilliant (also part of Sephton's Party) This party was located firstly at Rietfontein and then on the Assegai Bush River which was named Salem.

The following 5 paragraphs were received by E-Mail from Wendi Cusins on 12 Apr 2008, Wendi is descended from James WEBB. Wendi's paternal grandmother was a Webb - eighth child (of ten) of John James who was sixth child (of seven) of James. Information is not yet verified.

"By 1819 was living in London and working as a shoemaker. In London they owned considerable property and "were people of some standing". Sailed on 19 February 1820 on the "Brilliant", with Richard GUSH. Was then 34 <31> and his wife was 21 years old. . Arrived in Algoa Bay on 10 May 1820. Member of Hezekiah Sephton's party of 240 <344 or 400> people. One hundred of these, led by Richard Gush, moved by ox-wagon to their assigned location and founded the village of Salem south of Grahamstown on the Assegai River. Each settler was provided with two iron pots, a frying pan, one farm implement (spade or hoe) and a two-foot rule.

He returned to Grahamstown in 1824. In 1830 was making a living as a shoemaker. By 1845 he had bought a shoe shop in High Street. The family residence was in Chapel Street (now Bartholomew Street, Aretificet's Square).

Settler Christopher Webb had a quarry and supplied all the cut stone used to build the Commemoration Church in Grahamstown in 1845. He must have trained a gang of stone-cutters, for in the old records of the church it states that he used to send 150 chisels at a time for sharpening. One contract alone was for 100 wagon loads of stone.
In this church is a stained glass window in memory of Christopher and Mary Webb, John & Elizabeth Webb, and Thomas Guard and Ilva Webb, erected by Victor and Maisie Webb. These three generations of Webb were lifelong trustees of the church.

In Salem in 1844, C Webb donated one Pound for the building of a new school in Salem.

Christopher and Mary had 13 children, 7 sons. Sons Christopher and Joseph were aged 2 years and 3 months respectively when they arrived in Algoa Bay. Five of the sons settled in the Transkei, Komga, Stutterheim and Cathcart areas. William and John remained in the Grahamstown area.
Christopher died on 10 December 1863 in New Street, Grahamstown."

Salem: In Settler Country

Salem's the sort of place that you miss if you blink. The only person I saw was the shopkeeper who was, at the time, taking a cow to pieces behind the counter. On a blackboard were chalked the prices of choice cuts.

A bit up the hill perched the delightful old Salem Methodist Church peeping from behind tall cypress trees. It has been many things: a school, a fortress against Xhosa attacks and the witness to happy weddings, squalling baptisms and long sermons. David LIVINGSTONE's wife, Mary, was schooled there, as was Theophilius SHEPSTONE, once governor of Natal Colony.

The Salem Valley was settled in 1820 by Hezekiah SEPHTON and his party of 344. The real hero of the place, however, was Richard GUSH. When Xhosa warriors raided the area and drove off the settlers' cattle, he shamed the chief for his behaviour (the chief apologised) and offered his warriors bread and tobacco as well. After that Salem was left in peace.

Some records have Christopher married to Mary Gush.
From the records made available at the 1820 Settlers Museum in Grahamstown where they have piles of paper dealing with the many Webbs who went out in 1820, that Christopher Webb was married to Mary Gush, who was the sister and not the daughter of Richard Gush who was the Deputy Leader of Sephtons party which sailed in two ships, one of which was the "Brilliant".
However, this is incorrect as she was Mary Evans, (or Ann Mary Evans) confirmed by William Jervois of the Albany Museum who found a copy of her son James's death notice where she is named as Mary Evans - Cape Archives volume 6/9/657 ref 3400/10 lodged in 1910. The person completing this DN may not have known her exact names?

Richard Gush was the leader on "Brilliant". He was quite a guy, who against all wishes of his party who were sheltering in the Salem Church/Hall from an attack by the raiding Xhosa, walked out to the koppie where the Xhosa were assembled, negotiated with the Xhosa Chief, went back the Church, collected rolls of tobacco and some other goods, went back to the Xhosa Chief and handed the "booty" to the Chief who then summoned his followers and left with them, leaving the members of the Settler Community to get on with their lives.
A number of the descendants fought in the Frontier Wars, at least one was killed and one or more we decorated for bravery.
Richard Gush is buried in the Churchyard at Salem where there is a substantial headstone on his grave.

Notes:

Malvina was a beautiful woman with wonderful long auburn hair, with a regal and upright bearing. Quiet, impractical and not suited to the rigors of frontier life. She died aged 63 whilst on an ox-wagon journey in the Macleantown district. They were going to the farm of their eldest son, Edward Richard Dell, near Kei Road. Rupert Dell, her grandson, erected the tombstone on her grave at the Macleantown Cemetery, Eastern Cape, South Africa in 1882. According to a Death Certificate in her husband's estate file she died 19 July 1874.
