  1. 2.  John Gray was born about 1706 (son of John Gray and Mary Varnham); died before 1789.

    Notes:

No record as of March 2006 of his birth or death dates. Nor of any of his siblings. Aged derived from his apprenticeship.
Mentioned as deceased in brother Abraham's will of 1789.
Suspect he did not die in membership.

Of Reading, Berkshire according to son Newman's marriage record of 1772. Must have been alive as record would have said 'deceased' as it does for Jane Wilkinson's mother. Question whether he 'retired' to Berkshire or was born there.

His 'parents' abode' given as St Saviours Southwark in marriage record at Friends Library. Need to check baptism records for St Saviour's from around 1700 to 1712 and see if any of the GRAYoffspring pop up. Also check burial records between 1772 and 1789 for St Mary Reading.

This suggest he lived at some point in Southwark. This accords with the birth of some of his children in Southwark and marriage to Mary Newman there.

Problem is that his father was described as a salesman in son John's marriage record.
Question of his date of death: he is listed as being present at son Newman's marriage in 1772 and wife Mary is named as a widow in brother Abraham's will of 1789 proved 1794 so death sometime between 1773 and 1789 when first will was signed.

His son Newman was apprenticed to Jonathan Steele, a distiller, who was in partnership with Abraham Gray, brother of John and a wine merchnt. Jonathan Steele died in 1783 and was the son of Joseph and Jane Steel, the parents of Jane Steel, who was the mother of Newman's future wife Jane Wilkinson!

Pamphlet on his descendants in the service of the Crown in 1914 by Perceval Drewett Lucas. Copy in British Library and in the Friends Library, London. It is a folded large printed page with lists of male names under some of John Gray's descendants.

In a document supplied by Anthony Wallis 2006, with the name Robin Deas 1985 appearing on the page, there are various dates attributed to Grays. John Gray sen. has a date of birth attributed as well as a date of death. The DoB needs to be checked in the birth records of the L&M digests but it is unlikely to be there. None of his children years of birth has a day and a month attributed and some of them do not have years of birth attributed. This leads me to think that the Gray offspring were not born in membership of the Society or that the records were destroyed. Where there are years given, these most likely come from estimates based on age at death.

Date of death on sheet from Anthony assumes Jan but this does not accord with the old style calendar or with the names given by the Friends to the months.

John married Mary Varnham on Yes, date unknown. Mary (daughter of William Varnham and Dorothy) was born in 1679; died on 12 Aug 1759 in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England; was buried on 17 Aug 1759 in Long Lane burial ground, Southwark, London, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
