  1. 1.  David Barnes was born in Dec 1774 in Ireland; died on 5 May 1847 in Somerset East, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

    Notes:

    David BARNES was born in Ireland and arrived in the Cape in 1815.
    David BARNES b. abt. Dec 1774 in Ireland d. 5 May 1847 in Somerset East. He arrived in Table Bay on the 25 October 1815 on the "Dawson". He departed from Falmouth. His wife Elizabeth arrived in Table Bay, aboard the "Cornwallis" ex Fowey, the following year on 24 October 1816.

    In May 1818 he purchased erf11 in Grahamstown from John Sheppard.

    His death was reported in the Graham's Town Journal:
    Died at Somerset on the 5th May 1847 after a long and painful illness, Mr. David BARNES, aged 73 years and four months, deeply regretted by his family and friends. His funeral was numerously and respectably attended.

    He is buried in the Somerset East Museum Cemetery, Eastern Cape.

    David and Elizabeth BARNES had 3 children :

    i. George BARNES m. Elizabeth JACKSON (daughter of 1820 settler Samuel JACKSON) and had 9 children. They lived in the Somerset East area and their oldest son, George, married Sarah Ann TARR(grand-daughter of 1820 settlers Thomas and Ann TARR)

    ii. Elizabeth BARNES m. William JACKSON (son of 1820 settler Samuel JACKSON) Marriages made by their children included TARR and BADHAM

    ii. Eleanor BARNES (not on her father's death notice of 1847. so assumed to have died young.

    1. Elizabeth Barnes was born on 10 Dec 1820 in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa; was christened on 6 Feb 1821 in Salem, Eastern Cape, South Africa; died on 4 Aug 1864 in Green Fountain, Queenstown district, Eastern Cape, South Africa; was buried in Queenstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

    3. Eleanor Barnes was born in 1823; died in 1823.
