    Notes:

Isaiah Staples mentions John Edwards extensively in his epic "Narrative of the 8th Frontier War"..........
" Just a day or two before this time, our Field Cornet ( James Sweetnam) sent a small party of men with a wagon to procure a supply of ammunition from Fort Beaufort but very fortunately the Magistrate of the place refused to allow it to be sent, for fear it might fall into the hands of the enemy. The wisdom of this course was proved very forcibly, for, upon the return of the party the Kaffirs attacked them, capturing the wagon, and wounding the driver, a young Englishman, who received seven assegai wounds, but escaped very marvellously with his life. He was upon the seat of the wagon in front, and the kaffirs came on both sides of him, plunging their assegais into him. He then dived into the wagon, and jumped out at the back, and fortunately there was a large hole of water close by, into which he plunged, and it being dark, and he a good swimmer, by keeping under the water he managed to elude them and so escaped. Severely wounded as he was, he made his way on foot towards Fort Beaufort, a distance of about twelve miles. Of the other four men of the party two were killed. One had remained in town, only one returned to bring us the disastrous tale.

The two killed were John Austin, who left a young wife and three little children. The other was a young man named George Gibbens. These were the first losses as far as our party was concerned. "
On this occassion John Edwards was one of the two who miraculously survived the ambush in the Blinkwater Kloof by rebels under Hermanus Patroos . John Edwards arrived back to the stricken refugees at Post Retief that the 8th Frontier war had broken out and that they were not able to procure much needed ammunition.
