    Notes:

    Captain Edward J. Smith, Commander of the "unsinkable" Titanic on her maiden voyage, and the man ultimately responsible for driving her into an iceberg on Sunday night of 11th April 1912, was Maria's first cousin. The irony of that tragedy was that Senior Captain Smith - due for retirement after a long and distinguished career with the White Star Line - had been honoured with Titanic's maiden voyage - as a final gesture of appreciation for his loyal service, before leaving them. Captain Smith had decided to retire to East London, South Africa.

    There is a life size statue of Commander Smith at Litchfield, sculpted by Lady Scott, Sir Peter Scott's wife.
