Notes: In his young days he went on a hunting expedition with Gordon Cumming along the Sabi River towards the Lebombo Mountains, where he shot lion and buffalo. Hilton lived at 'Hales Owen' near Cradock where he was well known as a breeder of stud horses. In the Frontier War of 1878 he was Captain of Barber's Horse, and his services were mentioned inthe memoirs of Sir Evelyn Wood, who was in command of the British Troops. Later in life Hilton compounded his two names into a surname, calling himself Hilton Hilton-Barber, and his decendants bear this name. Hilton married Fanny Atherstone in 1866 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Fanny (daughter of John Atherstone, 1820 Settler and Ann Grant Damant, 1820 Settler) was born on 12 Oct 1843; was christened on 10 Dec 1843 in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa; died in 1882.
