Among the oldest stock-breeders in the country were Messrs George KING & Sons who owned the farms 'Primeston' and 'Elizabeth' in the Bedford district: both were famed for the quality of their livestock.

Shorthorns have been bred on these properties since 1867 and sheep since 1857. There was stabling for forty animals. But no mention can be made about 'Pimeston without a reference to Edward George KING's large troop of horses. He had an eye for a horse and a great love for it. His thoroughbreds were famous throughout the country. The annual gymkhana in Bedford which he instigated was the oldest in South Africa." ex Becky Horne
