The true story of the lion's claw brooch in the brass box and Meintjies Hart of Happy Valley
(Information from the diaries of Cecily Bowker Norden and a composition written by Pierre Norden, age 10)
"I have an Uncle Meintjies who was a big game hunter. Uncle Meintjies and his gunbearer went hunting lions one day and he took a lot of people to help hunt the lions. They all took tins and fine big sticks. When they walked into the bush all the people started to hit the tins and they made a great and frightening noise to chase the lions out of their hiding places.
Suddenly a lion jumped out of a big bush. Uncle Meintjies fired at the lion and wounded it in the left paw. The lion went straight for Uncle Meintjies who shot at the lion again and wounded it again. All the people who were with Uncle Meintjies ran off. The lion was ten feet off when Uncle Meintjies aimed at his head.
He pulled the trigger but the gun did not go off.
And the lion pounced on him and bit him on the hip. He was lucky that one of the teeth bit on a cartridge. The lion shook him like a cat shakes a mouse. Uncle Meintjies gave a shout of pain and it was a good thing he thought of a story his mother told him when he was young of a man who was walking in the woods when a bear ran at him. He pretended he was dead and the bear smelt him and walked away.
When the lion let Uncle Meintjies go he lay on his stomach is if he was dead. The lion smelt him and then nudged him on his side three times with his nose and then thinking he was dead the lion walked away.
What would have happened if Uncle Meintjies moved?
    Well I'll tell you.
The lion would have torn him to pieces.
Soon the other people came back for Uncle Meintjies and helped him to get home.
They found the lion lying dead nearby and had it skinned and today it lies in front of Uncle Meintjies' fireplace with its mouth wide open to remind him of the huge teeth that bit into his hip so long ago and could easily have killed him.
    The End.
by Pierre Norden, ten years old"
    (1956)
The mounted claw in the brass box is the one given to Gladys Hart Bowker by her brother Meintjies Hart of Happy Valley.
The 10 claws were set into brooches for his sisters, Ida, Lylie, Lily, Myrtle, Eulalie, Gladys, Pearl, Amy, his wife and his mother, Mary.
The brass box belonged to Mary Cottingham.
