The foundation stone was laid in 1873 and the building was open for service in 1877. Illuminating the chancel of the church are six beautiful windows representing the Crucifiction, Ressurection and Ascension of Our Lord. This lovely church built in stone is claimed to be one of the finest specimens of Gothic architecture in South Africa. The great window on the south side is the first stained glass window to be made in South Africa and is the work of Prof. F. W. Armstrong, A.R.C.A. It is a memorial to Julia, the daughter of William and Rosa Wright. This Julia married James Henry Greathead. From the time th church was opened for service in 1877 until she died at the age of 83, Julia Greathead, and after her her daughter Rosa who died at the age of 99 used to sit whenever attending service in the pew directly under the great south window. { Some Frontier Families, p 303 }
