    'I am glad that you have raised the discrepancy and have been mulling over Shaw's baptismal entries. It is obvious that these were entered quite some time after the event, as he had forgotten the date! It seems to me that either he or the parents muddled Charles' birth date and it is rather more likely that Charles' widow was accurate when giving his age on the DN. If so, then my guess is that he was born on 25 June 1835, which would make him just ten months younger than his brother Alfred!'
