    Notes:

ELIZA ELLEN and JOHN THOMAS JENNINGS

Eliza Ellen and Mr. Docherty had an infertile marriage. She was recently widowed.
Eliza Constance (Farley) Jennings was the daughter of Eliza Ellen . These two people met after they had both lost their spouses. In their share grief of their respective spouses, constantly meeting at the grave sites (at the cemetery in Grahamstown) of their respective love ones whose new graves were close to each other. Seeing each other's grief and loneliness. They introduced themselves and spoke of their bereavements. John Thomas had seven young children, left without a Mother. Eliza Ellen had never had a child of her own until then as Mrs. Docherty.

One afternoon she went out in the trap with a driver to take alms to the poor, They
Came upon a redheaded girl child. She was very neglected and lice ridden and
Desperately in need of succour. She persuaded her mother to give her into Eliza
Ellen's care. She care for her and subsequently legally adopted her bearing the
Name of Docherty. Consequently she was only a child when he married Eliza Ellen.

When the only child of the second marriage was born, Florence became viciously
jealous of this child who was my mother, Eliza Constance? When Eliza Ellen by then Jennings died Florence waged a bitter war over jewels left in the estate which it was deemed were for her only blood child (my mother) but which Florence claimed she was entitled to as the only child (even though adopted) by the Docherty's. These two women remained estranged because of this for over 20 years but were eventually reconciled. As far as we know, Florence went off with most of the Docherty Jewels. Apparently Mr. Docherty was reported to be a well to do man who travelled abroad a lot and brought various gifts of jewels back from these travels. Apparently he died at quite an early age.
