    Notes:

    When Henry was released from his obligations to Wait, he removed to the head of Belmont Valley after joining Barker on his location Waterford (break away from Wait soon after arrival). He moved to Bathurst in about 1823 where he was a shoemaker and then to Grahamstown in 1825 as Under Sheriff & Lucy was the matron.
    In 1827 the farm Kowiefontein, about 4 miles south of Grahamstown was surveyed by William Smith and this perpetual quit rent farm was granted to Henry on 27 June 1831. On 8 July 1834 a portion of Kowiesfontein was transferred to Robert Featherstone and was known as Featherstone's Kloof.
    Henry then moved to Fort Beaufort and after Lucy died there he returned to live with his son at Kowiefontein until his death in 1856. { per Lynn MacLeod}

    He was appointed Gaoler at Grahamstown, and Lucy as the Matron.

    A bit of a mystery regarding the death of Henry ULYATE as Samuel Cronwright (author of Her South African Ancestors) writes
    “ In March 1925 I accidentally came upon the grave of of Henry ULYATE in the English Church Cemetery, Grahamstown. It lies close to the west end of the little church there, and is well enclosed with iron railings, all in an excellent state of preservation. The inscription says he died on the 25th May, 1850 (sic) aged 77 ½ years, and was one of the British Settlers of 1820”

    Grahamstown Journal, Saturday 8th March 1851:

[Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Lucy Moles, 1820 Settler was born on 18 Dec 1784 in Hampstead, London, England; was christened on 9 Jan 1785 in St John Horselydown, Bermondsey, Southwark, London, England (daughter of John Moles and Lucy Jones); died on 7 Jan 1848 in Fort Beaufort, Eastern Cape, South Africa; was buried on 9 Jan 1848 in Fort Beaufort, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Settler ID: 575
    • Name: Lucy Moules 1820
    • Settler: 12 Feb 1820, The Downs, Deal, Kent, England

    Notes:

    This is quite a challenge of a family! It appears that William and Lucy Moles must have married in about 1803 somewhere in London. They had four children, Lucy Moles Finaughty, George William, Joseph and John Henry. Joseph must have died young because he did not go to South Africa with the 1820 settlers.

    On 26 February1810 a William Finnaughty was sentenced to imprisonment for larceny(theft). Engand and Wales Criminal registers 1791 - 1892 held at the National Archives under Class HO 26; piece 16, page 32. William was sentenced to 6 months in jail and a flogging. see http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?id=t18100221-73&div=t18100221-73 Is this where William departs the scene, and Henry Ulyate or Ullyate moves in? We have not been able to find a marriage for Lucy and Henry. Lucy's next 3 children all have Ulyate as a second name, and they 'drop' the Finaughty when they embark as 1820 settlers to South Africa, and subsequent children with Henry do not have the Finaughty name, but Ulyate.
