Notes: Quoting Beal Preston once again..."Piet Retief's party included an 1820 Settler, James Edward, formerly of Sephton's Party, Salem, but by this time living near Post Retief in the Winterberg. James Edward was the great grandfather of a descendant of Robert Miles, Colin Warren. With Edwards was his wife Ann and two young children. This settlers second son Thomas married Mary Ann King, daughter of the settler Joseph King, at Post Retief. In later years, as a widow Mary Ann Edwards was married again on the 4th January, 1886 at KingWilliam's Town to John Miles of Hilton in the Queenstown District, the third son of the settler Robert Miles. Notes: Extract from the Beal Preston book.'Other happy occasions were two weddings in the Miles family.Samuel Miles had fallen in love with Mary Ann, daughter of Philip and Charity Hobbs who had also come out in the Weymouth in Jame's party. According to the old St John's Church register, Samuel and Mary Ann were married on the 11th February, 1847. Elizabeth Miles signed as a witness. Their first Child,Ellen Eliza was born on the 19th March 1848. This couple were to be together for over 73 years and both died in the Cathcart District, aged 95 years.They were the grandparents of Niel Austin Miles. It is believed that Mary Ann and her sister Charity were under the care of the Rev.William Shaw and his wife for a while possibly when their Mother died.'
