Notes |
- Both Irene Ada (Rene) and Edwin are buried in the family plot at entrance to Block V, Stellawood, Durban. Edwin joined the Cape Mounted Rifles at age 16, transferred to South African Mounted Police on the formation of the S A P; saw service on police patrol during the Boer War, went up to German West Africa during the First World War in 1914 - 1918 where he was very ill with dysentry and bronchitis and nearly died. Station Commander in Pretoria Force - resigned in 1924 as Sergeant First Class after 26 years service in S A P. He was a storekeeper, Illovo Beach, 1924; Ticket taker in the S A R 1927; Handyman (engineering) British Overseas Airways 1943 then worked for Dunlop. Edwin is the grandson of Alexander Forbes, born 1793, who was murdered by the Xhosas on Christmas Eve of the 6th Kaffir War in front of his family. Alexander Forbes came out with Parker's party from Ireland with his (twin ?) brother Edward. Edward married Harriet McDowell (lived in Durban). [1, 2]
