  Issue : 2 children Biography William Southey -Graaff-Reinet - A cultural History by C G Henning In April 1859 sudden illness terminated William's political career and thereafter, one of the most unfrtunate episodes in the history of liquidations in the Colony took place. All his assets were auctioned without his knowledge. The press avoided details of his illness, possibly he suffered a severe thrombosis. Southey was now temporarily unable to manage his business interests. His former friends and 'so-called farming partners' (E. Howell, JU B Evans, Robert Bain and George Rex Jnr) turned this unfortunate episode to economic advantage. Without assessing Southey's assets, they declared Southey insolvent, and Graaff-Reinet witnessed one of the greatest liquidation sales in its history. Southey's financial empire included 8 farms in the district comprising 28 686 morgen, 6 farms near Bloemfontein, the finest stud flocks of sheep, goats, cattle and horses a town house at No. 42 Somerset Street, etc. In addition, his brother Richard, now Colonial Secretary, threatened legal action of a claim for £1,000. A reconciliation must have taken place, for after the Parliamentary sitting in Grahamstown in 1864 (the only time when this auspicious event occurred), William received appointments as Magistrate for Richmond, Alexandria and Middelburg respectively and retired in 1870.
