  From Captain Robert Southey's History of the Southey Family : " John was the eldest and Laurence the youngest (whose descendants retained Pitt) children of Laurence and Agnes Thomas. John was baptised at Culmstock in February 1700 and at the age of twenty married Dorothy Cillard of Culmstock in Exeter Cathedral. He left no children and his will dated December, 29 1740, was proved in 1748."
