Notes |
- From Captain Robert Southey's History of the Southey Family : "John, the third son of Thomas, was to inherit land under the will 'above his father's house and the house which Richard Parsons dwelleth in with a close, garden, and orchard attached to it." These two properties became John's at the age of twenty-four. John was not twenty-four in 1600 so he must have been born after 1576. Under his father's will these properties were to be divided between his three brothers, Thomas, Richard and Laurence, if he (John) did not attain the age of twenty-four. But John lived and married Mary Berry of Wellington at Pitminster on February 2,1635. Two years later be became a churchwarden of Wellington where he had been an overseer in 1619. John's signature is preserved both in the churchwarden's accounts and on the Mapledurham Indenture dated June 4,1623. The will John made on November 2, 1672, was proved on June 25th, 1673. In it he appointed his son-in-law Robert Bernie (doubtless a member of his wife's family) his executor and residuary legatee. The testator bequeathed sums ranging from five to fifty pounds to various relatives, and he made a small bequest to his maidservant; as neither a wife, children, nor grandson are mentioned in his will probably none was alive in 1672. In this will and on the Mapledurham document dated 1623 John described himself as a yeoman of Wellington. He paid rates on his Woodford estate from 1621 until his death in 1672 when Richard Sowthey continued to pay part of them. John's seat in Wellington Church was filled by his great nephew, John Sowthey, who subsequently married Mary Cannon of Fitzhead Court."
