  From Captain Robert Southey's History of the Southey Family : "Thomas, the fourth son of Thomas, was to inherit Tilly's Bargain (a property which his father had held with William Cape by indenture) at the age of twenty-four. In 1615 Thomas' name appeared among the unrated citizens of Wellington . Two years later (1617) Thomas paid for two seats in Wellington Church. Probably this was after he married Dorothy , a daughter of William Perry, then a yeoman of Wellington with considerable property in the town. William Perry died in 1621 leaving Thomas to pay rates in the tything of Woodford during that and the following year for a property which, so the Wellington Rate books record, had belonged to his father-in-law. In 1623 Thomas became an overseer of the parish of Wellington and died. His widow continued to pay rates in place of her husband until 1659 when she seems to have died. Her will was proved on June 20, 1661. In 1637 another Thomas Sowthey, a son of Thomas and Dorothy there is reason to suppose, paid for a seat in Wellington Church that had been Simon Blackey's. Thomas and Dorothy were survived by three children, Edmund (or Edward), Grace and Thomas."
