Notes |
- From Captain Robert Southey's History of the Southey Family : "Richard, the fifth son of Thomas, seems to have been rather a favourite. In 1601 Thomas bequeathed to his two youngest sons, Richard and Laurence, all the land on the north side of his house containing about nine acres with a close in Wellington town of two and a half acres. Presumably it was on this property Richard paid rates in the tything of Woodford in1621. His brother and co-heir Laurence never became a Woodford rate payer and so most likely the latter sold to Richard his share when in 1623 he needed money for a marriage settlement and moved to Culmstock. In 1627 Richard took possession of George Hawker's seat in Wellington Church; that same year he paid the church warden 6/8 for his mother's burial in the churchyard. He was appointed by his mother her residuary legatee and executor in her will proved at Wells on May 3, 1621. Richard and Robert were present when their youngest brother Laurence made his will in 1645. Under the Will they were asked to administer the testator's finances should his widow remarry. Laurence was survived by his widow less than a year so she did not remarry, Unfortunately there is no record either of Richard's Will or of the administration of his estate, and since Wellington Church records for this period are missing we know nothing whatever about any family which may have survived him; he ceased paying rates in the tything of Woodford, Wellington, in 1670 when we assume he died. Richard must have been a man of ability as both his mother and his brother Laurence selected him to administer their estates; and his father entailed Woodford on him and his heirs in the event of Robert, the eldest, dying without male issue."
