  Attended Wynberg Boys' High and Kimberley Boys' High. Started preparing to enter the ministry, but changed to education.Graduated at Cape Town University (B.A. Ed). Senior English master at Vryberg and then at Muir College, Uitenhage. He was active in church and Sunday school and was a Methodist lay preacher.
