Notes |
- Captain Peter John Cox, the man who piloted the first ship into the Port of Richards Bay, was laid to rest on Wednesday following his death on 13 July. As Port Captain of Richards Bay in the 70s, Cox had the honour of docking the SA Vaal on 1 April 1976. Prior to that, he was a harbour pilot in Durban during the hectic days of the Suez crisis in 1967, According to information from the TS 'General Botha' Old Boys Association web site, Cox was a Junior Cadet Captain and runner-up for the King's Gold Medal. He sailed as Cadet on the MV Sealandia, a Danish war prize run by the SA government as a troopship, thereafter in the SAR&H ships Agulhas, Erica, Dahlia, and Hangklip. Cox joined the harbour service after obtaining his Master's ticket in 1952. He started in Walvis Bay and served in all ports, except Port Elizabeth, in various capacities. After serving in Durban and Richards Bay, he was promoted to Port Captain of Cape Town in 1982 and shortly afterwards was appointed Port Director of Durban, being the first marine officer to be given this post which was in overall charge of the port's total operation. Cox retired in October 1986 and then completed a BCom degree.
