  He never attended a formal school but was taught by his sister May. She must have done a very good job as he loved reading and could do any task that he set his mind to. He came from a very talented family and many of them could skett and play musical instruments. He could play the Button Accordion as could his father. He also loved dancing and with his sister May, could do some of the most intricate steps of their time. He lost his mother when he was 16 and move State with his father and a year or two later he had joined the army during the 1st WW and was sent to East Africa. It was there that he became ill with malaria and sent back to SA on a hospital ship. It was in the Kroonstad distt he met and married my mother. Their fathers, Henry Whittal & Dave Randall, knew each other from their childhood and they had mutual relatives. He once again joined the army during the 2nd WW and after the war had ended, he sold upd to a farm in the Alexandria district. My Dad instilled in me a pride of my ancestry and with these records I hope to pass this onto my children and grandchildren. It was also he who taught me the simple secrets of life, namely, hond to do unto others as you want them to do unto you. He taught me a love of nature and to admire the creations of The Almighty. I wish I had paid more attention when he spoke about his family. (Vernon)
