• Notes

  Spelling of "Schuman" uncertain. According to Elmarie, the name change happened in 1871. He was born in 1871, an only child as his father Wilhelm had died six months before he was born. His mother was Mary Maria Dicks. He was raised by his grandmother Johannah Susannah Dicks (nee Torr). He was apparantly given a sick calf which he hand-raised. When it was half-grown, he swapped it for 2 calves and continued the process until he had a full span. He did fencing for farmers until he was able to buy the farm Kilman in the Elliot district.
