  served with the 1st South African Infantry as a Lewis Gunner. He was wounded 3 times in active combat and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. He was captured on 22 April 1918 and served the remainder of the war as a prisoner and was repatriated on 9 January 1919.
