Notes |
- Cecil John Rhodes had occupied Matabeleland, and Albert Surmon transported goods for him, by ox wagon, from Mafikeng to Bulawayo. As his “reward” for services, he was given “Crown Lands” from Cecil John Rhodes. Cecil John Rhodes, knowing his ruthlessness, probably commandeered these lands from local people “On Behalf of Queen Victoria”. In fact, what Cecil John Rhodes was trying to do, was to set up “Buffer Farms” owned by English People along the Bechuanaland/Transvaal Border, to prevent the “Boere” (Afrikaans Speaking People) from occupying Bechuanaland (Botswana). Albert Surmon’s farm was called Glen Valley and was located near Gabarone. This farm had the strongest artesian supply in Bechuanaland. [1]
