Notes |
- Rollo was “One of God’s Very Last Gentlemen”! He NEVER complained about anything or spoke badly about other people, EVER! He spoke perfect “old” Xhosa – none of this “i-creami, ibiscuiti”, etc. As a young lad, he swam into a raging river - coming down, knife in his mouth, to cut the oxen free from the wagon caught in the torrent and, having done that, swam to the other side. All the oxen made it out onto the other bank. He was, also, one of the 750 survivors of the Battle of Delville Wood in 1916. He was captured on Day 4 (ammunition ran out) and spent the rest of the war as a POW working as slave labour in a coalmine. For quite a while he was Missing-in-Action, Presumed Dead.
He attended the “laying of the cornerstone of the Memorial Clock Tower Ceremony” (St Andrews College, Grahamstown) at the end of the war. A “preppie” came up to him and said, “Sir, are you the Mr Bennett who’s dead?” He smiled wryly and answered, “Yes! I am.” {per Barbara bennett} [2]
