Notes |
- Cecil has had a distinguished career in civic affairs and on the sports field. He was a member of the King William’s Town Council during the years 1963 to 1967. and was mayor in 1965 and 1966. Again elected mayor in 1971, he continued to serve the community for another four years. He was also chairman of the Dale College School Committee for a period of twelve years. and has chaired numerous other public bodies representing a wide variety of interests.
A good sportsman at school. and also head boy, he gained first team colours while still in primary school. The first unbeaten rugby ream in the history of his college was captained by him in 1934. Later hc played for Transvaal. and went on to win his Springbok colours in 1937. During the last war, Cecil held the rank of captain in the Rand Light Infantry while in Africa and Europe, but unfortunately was wounded in both legs. His wife was a keen hockey and tennis player. and the couple share a common intcrcst in music as well, as Cecil plays the violin, and Marjorie the cello. [1]
