- Hugh was born in 1886 and educated at the Tarkastad School. During the Anglo Boer War he served as a fifteen year old in the Tarka Town Guard, manning the trenches around the town in case of attack from the Boer Commandos. He went farming in Zimbabwe and in World War 1 he served in East Africa with the 2nd Rhodesians and towards the end of the War was a Lieutenant in the 1st 3rd Kings African Rifles. He and his family emigrated to New Zealand where he died in his 94th year in 1980. His ashes are interred in the Wheatlands cemetery.
