Notes |
- John Henry Roestorff is a survivor of the sinking of HMS Cornwall by the Japanese during the Second World War. John was a South African volunteer with the British Navy and then went on to fight in the Burma Campaign. He was mentioned in the London Gazette for bravery during the Battle of Ramree, I believe. John’s little brother, Christiaan also volunteered with the British Navy and also fought in the Burma Campaign. What is interesting is that John could not swim. I have his enlistment documents where this is documented. To have survived the bombing of the HMS Cornwall and then keep afloat for more than 24 hours before being rescued is an incredible feat! And then to go back to see again! John by all accounts must have loved the sea as after the war he pursued a career as a captain of the fishing trawler. My dad, his only surviving son, has the same love of the sea!
