Notes |
- Joanne Polzin wrote "Rhoda was known by all as "Aunt Ting". She was the middle-born of three children - with Elizabeth ("Bessie") the eldest, and George ("Knott") the youngest. Their mother (Elizabeth Knott) brought up her three young children (Bessie, Ting and George) by herself after her husband (Sidney Stephen) died in 1901. They were all encouraged and taught to farm.
There were three Rhoda cousins born in the 1890s. The other two (both Knotts) were nicknamed "Tonnie" (1896) and "Toosie" (1898). Perhaps the nicknames were given to help differentiate between the three of them. Aunt Ting had a strong friendship with Toosie, and they travelled together to Kenya in the 1920s to visit Toosie's sister Louisa Harriet Knott (whom they called "Louie").
Aunt Ting served as a probationer nurse at Roberts Heights in Pretoria during the First World War.
My Dad says she was called "Ting" because she was like a bright, twinkly-eyed bird. It is an apt description from my memories of her. Kind and generous with an innate sense of joy and wonder and always so pleased to see people. She was a staunch supporter of the Baptist Church, and especially her beloved church at Louwskraal, which was built by her mother.
Aunt Ting never married, and was devoted to looking after her mother at Louwskraal until her death. After her mother died, Aunt Ting lived by herself on her farm Kliplaatdrift for the remainder of her life. We used to visit her on Sundays, except for Church Sundays.
She was greatly loved." [3]
