  Timm or Timms - A Mystery Most family traditions that we have come across is that there was an argument between two of the brothers of Thomas Timm/s, leading to one of the brothers (Charles, the older of the two) taking the family name Timms and the other brother (Edward) taking the family name Timm. I am related to Edward Timm, and the family tradition handed down in my family was that Edward "dropped the s". In other words, the name was originally Timms and Edward changed his name to Timm. However, our research has determined that in England and in the early days of South Africa, the names Timm and Timms were pretty much used interchangeably. For examply, there are almost an equal number of references to "Timm" and "Timms" in the Nottingham baptismal register. Thomas signed his name Timm on his marriage certificate, but at other times presumably gave his name as Timms (e.g. when some of his children were baptised). - the above from Mike Wright.
